I'm often asked, "How do I know if I have a good dentist?" Here's a guide to help you select or evaluate your dentist:
*You want somebody who will help you keep your teeth for a lifetime. You've got to find a dentist who has this important philosophy.
*Look for a dentist who maintains a clean office, a neat and personable staff, and is personally well-groomed.
*Look for thoroughness. Expect your dentist to give you a complete mouth exam of your gums, lips, tongue, salivary glands, and much more. This is an oral cancer screening, and an evaluation of your associated mouth structures.
*Your dentist should take x-rays. With modern equipment and techniques,
dental x-rays are safe and pose no danger to you.
*Expect that somewhere early in your visit, your dentist will take the time to sit and talk with you about your dental concerns. As a patient, you have a right to all of the facts.
*Look for a dentist whose "on time" record respects your valuable time. Except
for emergencies your dentist's "on time" record should be very good.
*Look for a dentist who will properly maintain your investment through periodic
re-examinations. We call this preventive maintenance.
*Expect to know your financial involvement and make arrangements prior to any treatment. You should not proceed with involved treatment without an estimate.
*A treatment plan and estimate can only be rendered after a complete examination.
Again, use these guidelines to assist you in selecting or evaluating your dentist. The American Dental Association maintains a complete library of consumer educational material that any member dentist can provide for you.
